Rittenhouse Square Eurostyle Contemporary Condo for Sale

This airy double unit from The Rittenhouse is designed for the work-from-home couple.

Comfortable furnishings and wood and stone accents lend warmth to what might otherwise have been an austere modernist condo. The deft blend of elements earned the architects who designed these rooms with a view at 202-10 W. Rittenhouse Square #2106-07, Philadelphia, PA 19103 an AIA Award of Merit in 2019. | Photos: Oskar Mikols, OM Media, via Kristen Foote & Co. Compass

Are you one of the millions of people who have really gotten to grips with working from home?

I mean, “comfortable” as in “I work in my pajamas and just wear a shirt and jacket for Zoom meetings”?

Now, does that also describe your significant other?

Well. If that describes the two of you perfectly, or even close enough for jazz, I’m sure you’ll love the condo featured today.

This contemporary Rittenhouse Square Eurostyle condo for sale sits 21 stories above the square itself, in the building that houses The Rittenhouse hotel and condominium.

This building has an interesting story in itself: started in 1970 by developer Jack Wolgin, who was in Philadelphia in the 1970s what Willard Rouse, Bart Blatstein and Carl Dranoff put together in the decades that followed, this 33-story, 314-foot-tall tower remained unfinished for more than a decade. Wolgin’s first lender called his loans after deciding that the prime land in the square could support a building taller than the building he had originally planned; then, after finding a second bank willing to fund the resumption of work in 1983, that bank was also seized two years later, producing a mess of lawsuits and a concrete and steel shell looming over the square.

The developer who purchased the land from Wolgin in 1986 had it much easier, eventually completing the building in 1989 as a luxury condominium resort. The hotel and condominium have performed well since their opening. In recent years, however, owners of many of The Rittenhouse’s condos have opted to update or even totally remodel their units, which had come to resemble vintage pieces from the 1980s.

These two units were combined and rebuilt in 2016. They are no longer period pieces, they now represent the epitome of that modern, minimalist yet comfortable mid-century Scandinavian/German aesthetic. This condo, designed by Alfred Dragani and Concetta Martone of Dragoni Martone Studio (dMAS), received an AIA Philadelphia Award of Merit in 2019.

White, hand-plastered walls make this residence light and airy by reflecting the abundant natural light that pours in through its many windows. Meanwhile, polished stone and wood accents give it warmth.

Its entrance hall opens into a spacious living room with furniture you’ll want to sink into. (If this interests you, you may want to ask the listing agent if the seller is willing to part with it.)

One side of the living room flows directly into the dining room and kitchen. As befits a modern, open European-style condo, you won’t find any formal dining areas here. Instead, a dining table that seats four is built into the Poggenpohl kitchen designed by Angela Pulizzi. His cabinets sparkle with the combination of lacquer and glass and whose Wolf, Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances are as high-end as the designer/manufacturer.

And speaking of appliances, its Sub-Zer0 wine fridge, pictured above, holds 175 bottles.

Beyond the galley, a dining counter facing the saloon seats two and a breakfast nook next to it seats four more. A second nook next to the breakfast nook could also be set up for formal dining.

A hallway leading to the living room connects the foyer to the condo’s two bedrooms.

It also has two dressing rooms and two bathrooms, one of which has a bathtub and a glass wall that allows you to admire the view of the square.

All of these nooks, views, and windows are due to the building’s ziggurat-shaped exterior, a feature that makes it almost unique among Philadelphia skyscrapers. (“Almost” because after starting this building, Wolgin decided to give the hotel he built at Broad and Locust streets, now the Doubletree, equally jagged exterior walls.)

And since this contemporary Rittenhouse Square Eurostyle condo for sale shares its building with the Rittenhouse Hotel, living there also allows you to use the hotel’s fitness center, spa, pool, and Paul Labrecque Salon. It also gives you discounted access to all hotel amenities and services, including housekeeping, room service, laundry service, catering, and banquet services. The building also has a doorman and concierge service and a town car with driver.

And when you feel like going out, some of the city’s best restaurants and libations are only a short elevator ride away: Lacroix, Scarpetta, Mary Cassatt Tea Room, Library Bar and Bar 210. You can also venture out and take advantage of all the other dining, drinking, socializing and shopping options that surround Rittenhouse Square.

Considering all this, the two parking lots that accompany this condo seem unnecessary. But I bet there’s at least one car between you two, which means parking will come in handy. One of the spaces is located in the Rittenhouse Garage across 20th Street.

But given that you’ll not only enjoy luxurious modern living but also four-star hotel services here, if you buy this contemporary Rittenhouse Square Eurostyle condo for sale, you may never want to get out of your pajamas, and again. less leave the building.
